Whole Foods Catering Kitchens

Whole Foods Catering Open House

by Eric Hegwer on 31 October, 2008

Who doesn’t know about Whole Foods?  Organic, Natural, Fresh, and even Healthy.  I’ll be you didn’t know that here in Austin, and in other select cities around the country they also have a catering business that is perfect for weddings.

The flagship Whole Foods Store in Austin has a great little Culinary Center, and last night  they had a very tasty Open House.  I’ve been very fortunate to have worked at a couple of weddings where they were the caterer, and let me tell you, they are tasty, professional, ant 100% High-End, without the high end wedding prices

When Jenn and I first walked in, I was shocked.  MaryAnn, Alex, Renee, and the rest of the cooks and planners have just remodeled their little area of the store.  I was quite surprised to find my photos all over the place!  They have 5 11×14 prints featured right as you walk in, and there are another dozen or so 8×8 square framed and matted prints throughout the store.
Whole Foods has also teamed up with Austin Party Central, and the entire Culinary Center was decorated with some amazing linens, tables, and glassware.  My good friend Ann even stopped by and we chatted about their new North Austin Location for a few minutes.
The menu was fantastic, too – One room had appetizers and desserts, and another had a complete Thanksgiving meal – Here is a rundown of some of the dishes we tasted:

  • Grilled Vegetable Terrine
  • Stilton and Pink Peppercorn spread with Drambuie
  • Ricotta-Sweet Potato Begnets
  • Mini Pumpkin Pie with Holiday Spiced Pecans

There was much more, but after  tasting all the above I was full!

Is digital faster than film?

by Eric Hegwer on 30 October, 2008

Film wedding photo

Fuji 400 Pro H

Well, it finally happened.  I shot a recent wedding on both film and on Digital cameras, and for the first time, I got the film proofs back before I even had a chance to edit the digital shots.  It’s been a pretty busy season, and I’ve gotten a bit behind so my usual turn around time of 2-weeks has stretched to a bit more than 3.

Here’s the story:  Right after I shot the wedding I put the rolls of 120 and 35mm into a padded Fed-Ex envelope and sent it off (2-day) to my lab.  I did this as the digital CF cards were downloading to my server.  Backed all the digital stuff up, burned it to disc, and added it to the cue of weddings to process.  I began to make the selects from the wedding and ended up with more than 1000 digital files to sharpen, color correct, and process in to proofs.  This morning, as I was starting the last batch of 200, my FedEx guy knocked on the door, and I signed for the package.  It was the proofs from the wedding that I sent in.  It only took 8 days for me to send it out, the lab to process it, and for me to get it back.

BTW – the scans from those shots are now included in the entire wedding.  I think it is pretty obvious as you look through the galleries which ones are film pics, and which ones aren’t.

Weddings in Austin

by Eric Hegwer on 29 October, 2008

It’s been a busy fall.  This past weekend I photographed two weddings.  Yeah, it’s something I said I’d never do again, but after meeting with each couple independently, I knew I had to shot their weddings.  The first was a friday event at the super scenic Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the Saturday wedding was up north on the lake at Nature’s Point.

No, this post doesn’t have any pics.  Of course everything is all backed up and loaded on my workstation in my office at home, but Sunday I was good for nothing, and the last few days I’ve been photographing a not-for profit agency here in Austin – The Center for Child Protection has been having their annual meeting at the Omni Hotel, and I’ve been donating my services to them, as I do every year.

Later this year, that same organization is having a spectacular event, Austin’s Dancing with the Stars.  Tickets are still available for this December 7th event – here is the website (with some of last year’s pics by yours truly).

If you work for a not for profit agency, and need some shots for your website, newsletter, or brochures, feel free to give me a call – I’m usually available weekdays, and would love to help your organization.
