Getting ready for a wedding

by Eric Hegwer on 31 January, 2009

Today, I’m getting ready for a fantastic wedding in Austin.  I photographed the couple late last year, you may remember the blog post where we got kicked out of Ziler Botanical Gardens.  Well today they are tying the knot at a fantastic church near the Austin Captial – First United Methodist Chruch (FUMC for short).  Then, if the plan goes right they are hopping into a horse drawn carriage and going to the Austin Club.  I’ve shot a lot of events at The Austin Club, and look forward to working with their fantastic staff once again.

Before each and every wedding I have a little routine I do.  It doesn’t matter if I am at home or on the road, it never changes, and ensures that I’m ready for anything, and that my gear is in tip top shape.  Here is a list of 10 things I do before every wedding:

  1. Make sure the car has a full tank of gas
  2. Print out directions to each and every location. – Sometimes GPS doesn’t work as well as it should
  3. Have phone numbers for the coordinator, venues, and couple programmed into the cell phone
  4. Charge all batteries for all cameras and flashes
  5. Format and check all memory cards in the Nikons
  6. Make sure I have a stack of business cards to give to people, only if they ask for one
  7. Grab enough film out of the fridge to shoot an entire wedding – just in case
  8. Clean all lenses
  9. Clean all sensors
  10. Make sure there is tupperware in the car so I can bring home a piece of cake for my wife.

You never know how a wedding is going to go. Sometimes you expect one thing, and another happens. I’ve been to a lot of weddings, and have seen pretty much everything, but every now and then something comes up, and I like to be aware and open to all the possibilities. The last thing I want is to be unprepared.

Something to Celebrate

While surfing the web today, reading some of my RSS feeds, I learned that the wedding coordinators at Something to Celebrate are doing the most amazing thing.  One of their coordinators, Rebecca is looking for a couple getting married in either April or May of this year (2009).  They are holding a drawing to coordinate your wedding for free.

I‘ve worked with the fine folks at Something to celebrate many times.  In fact, several years ago when I relocated to Austin, they were the first Austin coordinators I met.  Jessica was so nice, and helpful, and I knew that this carried over into everything she did.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on their blog.  They will hold a drawing to determine the winner.  Be sure to include you name, wedding date, location (this only applies to Austin weddings), and a short reason why you should be picked.

If you are the lucky winner, you are going to have an amazing experience working with them.   Best of luck to you!
