Engagement Pics at Laguna Gloria

Everybody who reads my blog on a regular basis knows I love shooting at AMOA Laguna Gloria. So when I was asked by Kelly if I wanted to shoot her e-pics there I jumped on the chance. Normally I like to schedule the shoot a litle later in the day, especially in the summer when it’s not so hot, but in order to meet everybody’s schedule, we decided that 4:00 in the afternoon would be the best time. And was it ever!

All in all we spent an hour walking the grounds, finding all the best spots, and just having a great time. There were well over 100+ incredible shots, and the couple will get all of them on the CD so they can do whatever they want with them. By the way – if you do hire me, I love to see how you use the photos. One couple even made a custom CD of their favorite songs and handed it out as a wedding favor. And on the cover of the CD case was one of their engagement pics.
Anyway, these two were so very cute together. At first, as always, things were a bit stiff, as they didn’t know what to expect, but after 10 minutes or so, they were super relaxed in front of the camera. Enjoy your photos!

It didn't take long for these two to feel comfortable in front of the camera.

Even though the couple didn't wear vintage clothes, I decided to do a little post processing to this shot, and gave it an antique look.

Blowing Dandelions

Sarah & Adam are both in the military up at Ft. Hood. Later this year, they are tying the knot at the Vineyard at Florence. But first, they wanted to have some fun engagement pictures that said a bit about who they were. We headed out to Temple, Tx, one cold winter afternoon (the high that day was 38°), and had a ton of fun.

An engagement session is a great way to “try out” a wedding photographer. Once you contact me to learn more (I’m way better than your friend with a camera, and not that expensive), I’ll provide tips on what to wear, amazing location ideas, and posing tips for you and your fiancée. Engagement Pictures at Star Hill Ranch

I loved the feel of this shoot – Star Hill Ranch is down hwy 71, Past the Y at Oak Hill, and just a couple of turns past the place that used to be called the Backyard on the way to Hamilton Pool. Adam, the owner has recreated an old Texas town by carefully relocating old buildings from around the state to his Ranch. There is a Chapel, a Saloon, Dance Halls, Porches, and tons of other cool stuff.

At first an engagement shoot is always a bit strange. We’ve had an initial consultation, then a bit of business (contracts, retainers, and that sort of stuff), but then not much else. That’s one reason I have this blog, couples can read all about my life, and get to know me a bit better before I ever begin to click the camera. I know it helps people to loosen up that much faster, and that makes for better pics.

In fact, during our pre engagement shoot phone call we both realized that we were at Lumber Liquidators (the place where I got my new floor that is going in today!) at the same time, but weren’t 100% sure. Austin is such a small town.

I used to be recognized all the time back in California, and now it’s happening again in Austin. I guess that was bound to happen since I meet somewhere between 17 and 200 new people every weekend at a wedding.

Engagement pictures at UT

Engagement pictures on the UT campus are one of the most popular engagement sessions here in Austin. Many of my wedding photography packages include an engagement session, and if you already have a wedding photographer, you can always arrange for an a-la-carte session.

What is an engagement session? Simply, it is about an hour long photo session between the two of you and your photographer (me). Of course you can choose where you want your engagement pictures to be, but many couples choose to start in front of the UT tower for pictures. There are lots of great places on campus, too.

But engagement photos are more than just putting the two of you in front of a fancy door, or colorful wall. A monkey can make pictures like that. What I’m after is something more – I look for that spark between you. Those little moments when you let your guard down, and the two of you act the way you normally do. Relaxed, fun, easygoing. Sure, we will do the formal posed stuff. The stuff your mom wants, the stuff you can use on your wedding blog, or for a picture in the paper. But then we will do some other engagement pictures, the kind that you hired me for. The kind of pictures that you will love, and you mom will love, too.

Zilker Botanical Gardens

A couple of weeks ago I had a fantastic Engagement Session at the Zilker Botanical Gardens. At the session I brought along my Nikon F5 and shot several rolls of Fuji Film. Here is the second part of that shoot.

Yes shooting film is a bit more expensive than digital wedding photography, but if you ask me, the colors are just fantastic. The square one was taken with one of my toy cameras, the Holga.

By the way – approximately 1/3 of all proposals happen over the holidays (this month). I think that the Botanical Gardens in Austin are a fantastic place to propose for a wedding.

Engagement Photos at the Zilker Botanical Gardens

It was a wet sunday morning in north Austin, but the forecast called for the afternoon to be clear downtown. This was good, because I had an engagement session at the Zilker Botanical Gardens, and the couple didn’t want to postpone because of the weather. We were going to make it work.

I showed up early to take care of the paperwork and fees. Yes, they charge for any kind of professional shoot. Don’t try to sneak in, they have people patrolling, and if you look like a serious photographer, you are going to get busted, and kicked out, and only make things worse for the pros that do follow the rules. Besides, there are tons of great places to shoot in the area for free. But when you do pay, the Japanese garden inside the gates is worth it.

The couple showed up right on time, and I gave my usual talk about how I run engagement photo sessions. Some fun stuff, some creative, as well as the standard posed stuff that mom and dad want.

We had a bit over an hour to roam the gardens. Sunday afternoon was crowded, kids were running all over the place and adults yelling at them to get out of the flower beds. I was able to find some great, quiet places, and we got some killer shots. And as the afternoon got later, the light got better, and people started to go home.

That’s when we got kicked out too. Just sun was just about to set, and the light got really sweet, no less than two different employees came and told us the park was closing and it was time to leave. I tried to push it, but they were adamant. I was getting kicked out of another facility (this was the 5th place in Austin I’ve been kicked out of).

We finished up with some sunset shots in the parking lot, but again one of the employees came up and told us that it was time to go.

I think the shots came out great, and I know the couple loves them too, they are all over her Facebook page!
