A Steampunk Bathroom

by Eric Hegwer on 28 March, 2009

vrtclvlMy introduction to SteamPunk came with a puzzle I used to do on rainy days. My folks had lots of puzzles – they were stacked high in the entry closet, and while they always wanted me to do a ‘new’ one, I always loved this colorful jumble of observation decks, hot air balloons, kites and other flying machines, spires, towers, and olde time shoppes.

It continued when I would visit my Grandmother in Santa Cruz. Ever time we would spend a weekend with her, my brother and I got to play a round of mini-golf at Neptune’s Kingdom at the Santa Cruz Beach BoardWalk. The history of the building combined with it’s modern use is almost the perfect example of how I define steampunk – “The path not taken with technology”. At one time, the Art Deco Neptune’s Kindom was called the Plunge Building and it housed a large saltwater swimming pool. Today it is full of pinball games, mini-golf, and other arcade attractions.

So as we are in the midst of removing the old owner from our new house, different design ideas constantly pop up in my head. And the most obvious for the master bath is a Steampunk theme, well at least to me.

When I explained it to Jen, and told her it was sort of like the Life Aquatic movie, she immediately put her foot down. And that was that.
