There was this really cool fashion show yesterday here at the domain – live mannequins, and great deals at all the stores, runway shows, and live music after dark.
All the activities are very cool. And when I used to tell people that I lived in an apartment above Tiffany’s the first impression was “how cool”. Alas, that was our first impression, too, and was quickly shattered when we learned that there is a ton of production that has to go on before and after these hip Austin Events.
Let’s take last night’s show for instance. The band played from 7:30 and went for 2 and a half hours. With the break, that’s about 130 minutes of entertainment. About 18 songs.
But let’s take a look at the day from My perspective (the only one that counts) -
Friday Night (1 days before the show):
10:28 PM – A guy drives around in his little Diesel golf cart (putt – putt – putt) and begins to block off parking places – He drives 1 space and drops down a white traffic cone (plunk – plunk – plunk). I can hear him from 2 blocks away as he drives up and down doing his job.
11:06 PM – Security comes by and drags large metal fences across the lanes to completely block off the street. This takes 16 mintues as they need to find the perfect position to effectively block traffic.
Saturday morning
7:13 AM – The rental truck comes – and backs up into position (beep, beep beep) – the workers pull out sections for a stage, tables, and chairs. They then hammer, drag, and force the stage into shape – this takes about 2 hours – so much for a peaceful saturday morning.
7:46 AM- El Jeffe, the leaf blowing maniac comes by and thoroughly cleans all cement surfaces.
8:02 AM – Crews begin to set up the tables and chairs
9:26 AM – Some idiot tries to move the metal gates so they can drive down Century Oaks and get a good parking space – Everybody who is working on the street immediately begins to yell at them
10:41 PM – The Roadies arrive and begin to set-up speakers, amps, lights, and generators
12:33 PM – Soundchecks begin – Just as prime Saturday Napping time starts – The testing is so loud, that I can’t even hear my TV and watch the Sweet 16 get narrowed down to the final four. It’s so loud that I can’t hear when the microwave goes off and my lunch is ready.
3:02 PM – End of Sound checks.
7:30 PM – The band takes the stage – and they suck.
10:15 PM – Roadies take over and begin to tear down the gear
11:30 PM – The rental truck backs out and drives off
Sunday Morning -
7:30 AM sharp – The crew arrives and takes down all the stage. This takes exactly 23 minutes. They are fast. Why couldn’t they start at 10:00, instead?
If you want to have any time to relax, living at the domain is not for you. This kind of stuff happens all the time. There is no break.
The large metal barriers that security drags into position, and drivers physically move to get a better parking space.

That really sucks. Pity the band wasn’t any good either. Really they should have some consideration for the residents.
