Leap Year

Yesterday was leap day.

Here’s a fun fact you might not know about years with Feb 29 – It doesn’t happen every 4 years.

I also like to use this info to debate Flat Earthers for fun.

Also, here’s a fun fact about Flat Earthers: Most of them have picked up this mis-information in prison. So if you come across a someone who doesn’t belive the Earth is a Sphere, you can bet they probably spent some time behind bars.

Because it takes the Earth around 365 ¼ days to rotate around the sun in orbit, every 4 years we add a day, leap day, on Feb 29th to account for that ¼ day. Remember 4 x ¼ day = 1 day.

But it isn’t exactly ¼. It is 365 days 6 hours, 9 minutes. If it were exactly 6 hours, 9 minutes  of 24 hours it would be 6 hours, but we have to acount for those 9 minutes.

So every 100 years we skip leap year. Except we also adjust that every 400 years (to account for the seconds that I didn’t mention).

This means that in -00 years we may (or may not skip the leap). Here’s a little table outlining which leap years have been skipped:

Leap Year Skip Table

In all probabability I won’t see the year 2100. I’d be turning 130. What a party that would be! But I did see 2000 – and trust me, at the time there was a lot of talk about the math around the 400 year leap year calculation.

Back to the wierdos.

If you want to easily dispute a Flat Earther- simply ask them for the true date.

Flat earthers shouldn’t believe in leap day, because they don’t believe the Earth is round and orbits the sun.

If you are reading this and it is still 2024 – and it is after Feb, 29th, they should say that it is one day earlier than it actually is. But that is a mis-calculation. They are only taking into account this leap day – not all the leap days in history.

Which means that for the last 2000 or so years, there has been an extra day added around 500 times – A real nut job would know that all those extra days add up, and that we are actually on a different date. I’ll let those people waste their time on the calculation.

Also, I had a date lunch with the wife at Plae Bistro, and it was fantastic – Had their lunch trio with the Grilled Cheese, Ceasar Salad, and the most incredible Vegan chili I’ve ever had. I wish I took a photo.
